Dress-up the Building

“Dressing up the building”, the first of the Material !ndeed workshop series, aims to construct the written and visual information system which is essential for the material selection process in architectural design. Thus, knowledge about material selection process can be accessible for architecture students and novice architects by creating a structured, comprehensive, and interpretable format for material information interface. In this context, the main output of the workshop is to design a digital database to facilitate material selection in the architectural design process. The database to be constructed will be developed through the contribution of the material to the process of creating the design language, via experiencing the materials one-to-one, conducting literature research on materials, and exemplifying the current application alternatives of the building materials. The workshop covers a 10-day program and participants are expected to work in groups of 2. The “Dress up the building” workshop focuses on cladding materials with different origins (metal, polymer, mineral, soil, etc.) that can be used in the building envelope. Thus, the 10-day research offers a fruitful working environment where participants will develop their knowledge and experience about cladding materials that can be used in the design process of facade and roof systems. At the end of the workshop, it is aimed that the participants gain the following competencies and skills.

• The ability to learn the basic resources related to cladding materials and to conduct literature research on a specific subject by using different search engines, external databases etc. 

• Ability to represent theoretical knowledge obtained from different resources by configuring diagrammatic, representative, and comprehensive language. • Ability to transform data into written and visual information using digital tools.
